The National Museum of Singapore reopened in December 2006 after three years of restoration and reinvention. Built by Colonel Sir H.E. McCallum as the former Raffles library and museum in 1887, the neo-classical building was been joined by a new modernist extension of glass and metal, giving the museum a total area of 18,400 sq m. The museum's Gallery Theatre is a multi-functional venue that serves as a 247-seat cinema theatre, a black box performing arts venue and an exhibition space. It is equipped with the latest digital surround sound and projection systems.
